A long lasting project started…..

Yesterday I started the long overdued project of scanning my stock of films into digital image.  This is the first one I did.  It was taken in 1966 in Huang Shan of China with the Mamiya 645, 45mm lens.  This is one of my favourite shots of Huang Shan which I went for 6 times over 10 years.  The scanner is the Minolta Multi Pro.  It is quite a good scanner with capability to scan up to 6X9 film in high resolution of 4800 dpi.  A pity that this scanner is now discontinued.  The scanned digital image is about 500MB in size.

In terms of perceivable resolution, my Canon 1DsMKII’s 16MP can definitely outperform the the 645 film medium.  If this Huang Shan image was captured in by the 1DsMKII, it should surely has less noise (grain) and far sharper small details.  However, there is something in the film that has this sense of richness in colour harmony that is lacking in digital image.  This could be my nostalgic feeling at play.

I am glad that I finally get myself together to publish this photo gallery for sharing my photos with friends in the internet. This has been a long overdue project for me but time and again, was seriously delayed for various reasons. This web site is created by me with my very limited knowledge of web design and I must thank my good friend Felix for rendering timely help to me. It will take a while before I can get the full volume of pictures on line and I can only ask visiting friends be patient with me.

As for this News and Views column, I hope to bring to you the up-to-date news happening in the photographic community, my views on new photographic equipment, software and hardware, as well as to share my experience during photo trips. In the meantime, I wish everybody a Merry X’mas and Happy New Year.
